In the app
Restore a purchase
Open Parent Zone, after the question for a grown-up. Restore Purchases is with the subscription there, and also on the paywall. Restoring needs the internet at that moment.
Cancel or change a subscription
Apple sells and bills the subscription. Change or cancel it in Settings › Apple Account › Subscriptions. Cancel at least 24 hours before the current period ends, or it renews on its own. Parent Zone also has Manage subscription.
Download a better voice, and choose one per language
In Parent Zone › Voices, each language your children use shows the voice in use. You can pick any voice installed on this device, or Automatic, and hear a sample. The choice stays on this device. If a better voice is not installed, Parent Zone explains how to download it. The list is in Settings › Accessibility › Spoken Content › Voices.
Chinese is read in the wrong voice on iPhone
On iPhone, Chinese may be read in Mandarin when you chose Cantonese, or the other way around, even when Bilinga has chosen a specific voice. The iPad is not affected. Open Settings › Accessibility › Spoken Content › Voices › Chinese › Speech Language and set it to Mandarin, not Default. The same note is in Parent Zone › Voices, and under that child’s Chinese voice setting.
Speaking speed, Chinese voice, Can read, and syllable colors
Open Parent Zone, then that child’s page.
- Speaking speed: Slower, Normal, or Faster.
- Chinese voice: Mandarin or Cantonese, when Chinese is one of that child’s languages.
- Can read: Yes or Not yet, for the language they are learning. When it is on, Today’s 5 words also uses the reading and spelling games. Your child can still choose any game.
- Syllable colors, with the other reading helpers. The word stays spelled as it is; the colors show the syllables.
Prepare offline translation
On that child’s page, Prepare offline translation asks Apple to download the language files for that child’s pair. Apple’s own download sheet appears. Bilinga does not send the words. The row is hidden when Apple does not support the pair. Simplified and Traditional Chinese together never offer it. A child cannot start this download.
Turn voice search back on
If the microphone or speech recognition was not allowed, the button is hidden from your child. Parent Zone then shows a short note that voice search is off, and a button that opens Settings. The note goes away once both are allowed.
Add a child
In Parent Zone, Add a child is in the list of children. The free plan includes one child. A second child needs Bilinga Plus, including Bilinga Plus Lifetime. You can have up to four. Each child has their own languages, settings, and progress.
Reset a child’s progress
On that child’s page, Reset progress clears that child’s review schedule, Learn sessions, and practice days, so the days in a row start over. Favorites, recent lookups, and stickers stay. Other children’s data is left as it is.
Can Bilinga’s menus be in a different language from my iPad?
Yes. The menus follow your iPad’s language. If the iPad uses a language Bilinga doesn’t offer, the menus are in English. This is separate from the two languages each child learns, which you set in Parent Zone.
- Language appears only when the iPad lists more than one language. Add the one you want in Settings › General › Language & Region › Add Language, and keep your current language as the primary so nothing else on the device changes.
- Open Settings › Apps › Bilinga › Language and choose it. Japanese menus on an English iPad are one example.
